To many people in China, WWF is simply known as 'the Panda Foundation.'
Here the giant panda is a treasured national symbol, and now
thanks to our famous logo it has also come to embody concepts
like nature and environmental protection.
People often ask how a global organization like WWF came to
choose a rare Chinese animal to be our logo. The answer lies
back in 1961 when naturalists Julian Huxley and Max Nicholson
were in the process of setting up WWF to be a global fund
raising organization for nature conservation. That year Chi-Chi,
a giant panda, was touring European zoos to great public interest
and acclaim. Huxley and Nicholson realized that here was the
perfect symbol for their new global network - strong, recognizable
and appealing - and so our logo and our long association with
the panda was born.
To mark WWF's 25th anniversary in China we have compiled
this outline of 25 of our proudest achievements in the home
of the panda.
