Good afternoon distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen
Firstly, on behalf of all the 2004 wetland ambassadors,
please allow me to thank WWF, the Ramsar Convention secretariat,
the State Forestry Administration of China, the Lijiang
government and the Danon-Evian Group for offering us such
a great opportunity to promote wetland conservation and
exchange experiences amongst ambassadors.
Wetland ecosystems, as one of the three distinct biomes
on the earth, have played an important role in the lives
of human beings. However, because of the human race’s unsustainable
exploitation patterns, the size of wetland has decreased
sharply, and their functions have also diminished gradually.
As the world population continues to grow, these factors
will represent an increasing threat to human lives. Fortunately
however, more and more people, governments, and non-governmental
organizations have realized the threat and have taken real
and significant actions on wetland conservation. As university
students, we also must not shirk from our responsibility
to contribute to wetland conservation.
Today, we gather together in the beautiful town of Lijiang
in Yunnan Province for the“2004 Wetland Ambassador Action”launch
ceremony. This ceremony, however, is only the starting point
for our wetland ambassadors’ action.
Despite the fact that wetlands constitute an entire ecosystem,
their management has long been divided amongst different
administration units and different regional governments.
This fragmentation has become a serious restriction for
wetland conservation nowadays, and as such, Integrated River
Basin Management is becoming more and more important for
wetland conservation. In 2004, we will work with ambassadors
from different countries focusing on “IRBM” along the Yangtze
and Lancang-Mekong Rivers. I hope that, through working
together, our ambassadors’ can help to promote co-operation
in wetland conservation and Integrated River Basin Management
among countries.
Together, let’s build up a partnership for a living river
and join hands for a better future for wetland conservation!
