Position title:Director of the Species Programme£¨Beijing£©

Reports to:Conservation Director of Biodiversity, WWF Beijing Office

Supervise:The staff of the Species Programme in Beijing

Location:WWF Beijing Office

Main Responsibility:

Develop and implement a Species Programme Strategy for WWF China, incorporating the Global Species Programme targets and other priorities identified in China.

Major Functions:

In charge of the development of the WWF China¡¯s species programme strategy in line with WWF GPF and International species programme strategy;

In charge of the partnerships with central government and international agencies related with species programme in China;

Providing the advanced science, technical and policy supports to related programmes/projects in WWF China¡¯s priority areas;

In charge of the national and international policy advocacy on species conservation in China;

To be as WWF China¡¯s focal point to coordinate and communicate with WWF Network and outside partners on species related technical and policy issues;

Coordinate the development and implementation (in collaboration with TRAFFIC East Asia) of a portfolio of campaign and lobbying activities necessary to reduce pressure on wild species from China¡¯s wildlife trade.

Provide technical and policy support on species conservation related communications and public campaigns strategy and implementation related to in China

In charge of the team building of WWF China¡¯s species programme and related field programme staff on species conservation.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

Develop and implement the Species Programme strategy for WWF China. Ensure that this strategy supports Targets and Goals of the Global Species Programme and WWF China Country Strategy.

Lead the development and review of proposals, and subsequently provide programmatic support and oversight in the implementation, monitoring and reporting of a portfolio of projects and activities towards achievement of species conservation targets and goals

Lead the development and implementation of the Tiger NI China Programme and provide a leading role to coordinate with the Tiger NI Shareholder Group and Amur-Heilong Steering Committee;

Develop, or support, and review annual work plans and budget for species conservation in close coordination with the Conservation Directors, directors of other thematic programmes and field offices, and WWF International Species Programme;

Provide advice and technical support for the conservation of WWF priority species to other programmes and offices, especially the Changchun Programme Office within WWF China;

Monitor the progress of projects and activities against the targets and goals, and prepare overview and summary reports and associated information;

Develop and maintain communication linkages between project executants, relevant NOs/POs, scientists and experts, and other relevant entities to facilitate consultation, information exchange and knowledge sharing;

Network with programme, policy and communications staff within WWF and key external partners to increase synergy and linkages between WWF's species conservation work and other conservation efforts, assimilate useful lessons from other programmes/action plans and vice versa, and garner necessary technical and funding support;

Develop a comprehensive range of tools and materials for information, communications and campaigning on WWF's species conservation activities to increase success, public and professional support and awareness, and to aid fund-raising;

Develop and maintain a database of all WWF projects and activities related to priority species conservation, and lead in the production and dissemination of overview and analysis reports of progress and funding/expenditure on an annual basis;

Organize a review and planning process every second or third year of the implementation of the Strategic Action Plan to assess progress of the projects and activities, exchange information and activities, exchange information and experiences, revisit and fine-tune objectives, priorities and implementation as necessary, and accordingly determine future directions;

Organize, and participate in (if appropriate), evaluations of landscape-specific projects as well as the WWF species conservation programme as a whole;

Keep abreast with developments in the field of species conservation, and alert the Network on emerging issues and trends.

Focus on the conservation of WWF flagship species including giant panda,tiger, finless porpoise and snow leopard and other nationally -identified priority species in China

Work in collaboration with relevant parties to develop and implement activities wildlife trade in China.

Hire and manage Species programme staff. Provide them with regular feedback and guidance, as well as opportunities for training and professional development.

Actively participate in the WWF China Biodiversity Conservation Team activities.

Work to maximize synergies between Species and other programme activities to help insure achievement goals and objectives of Yangtze EAP and Tiger NI in China..

Represent WWF China in internal and external meetings and events relevant to the Species conservation.

Working Relationships:

Internal: frequent contact with Conservation Director of Footprint , Directors of Freshwater, Forest and Climate Change Programmes in Beijing Office and Heads of Field Programme Offices, , Communications, Finance and Administration staff, regular contact with WWF International and Nos Species Programme team.

External: with TRAFFIC, IUCN, Wildlife Conservation Society, Flora and Fauna International, US Fish & Wildlife Service, Government Aid Agencies, other key institutional partners, relevant government agencies at various levels, and independent experts to enlist technical and financial assistance, and to exchange information and experience.

Qualifications Required

Knowledge: A Master's degree in wildlife/species conservation, conservation biology or a related discipline, preferably with tiger and giant panda or landscape conservation experience. A sound understanding of species-related conservation issues in general, and knowledge of relevant international conventions such as CBD and CITES.

Experience: Minimum of 5 years relevant work experience, first hand conservation experience on WWF priority species in the field a distinct advantage. Hands-on experience in programme/project cycle management including define, design, implementation, monitoring and evaluation, adaptive management and reporting, communications and magnification, as well as international conservation experience will be assets.

Skills and Abilities: Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work with people of diverse cultures essential. Strong written and oral communication skills in English and Chinese. Experience in working with teams and coordinating multi teams work will be essential, as well as building partnerships outside WWF. Creative, strategic personality in order to develop a plan for nature conservation in which partnerships with other people and organizations play an important role. Good working knowledge of computer and familiarity with the use of electronic media.
