Introduction

WWF China's Panda Program concentrates on implementing projects in Sichuan and Shaanxi provinces (the habitat of the giant panda); conducting conservation-oriented surveys, biodiversity monitoring and research on endangered species and their habitats; and building local capacities for nature reserve management.

The giant panda's current habitat has shrunk to a fraction of its original size

The greatest threat to the survival of the giant panda is habitat loss.

To address the current challenges,WWF is focusing on the following objectives: By 2012, to increase giant panda populations and their habitats by at least 10% in selected priority areas (Minshan in Sichuan province and Qinling in Shaanxi province) through the mitigation of key threats to pandas and their habitat and the implementation of model conservation approaches by WWF and its partners. At the same time, through effective project demonstration and magnification, to stabilize panda populations and their habitats elsewhere.

 WWF's current panda conservation projects

Qinling panda focal project

The Qinling Mountains in Shanxi province contain the highest panda population density in the world. WWF is working with the provincial government, local communities, and businesses to reconnect the separated pandas in the area.

Panda Conservation in the Minshan Landscape

Minshan is a forested region in northern Sichuan and southern Gansu provinces that is the most important remaining stronghold of the giant panda. It covers the largest giant panda habitat and supports the greatest number of wild pandas. The aim of this project is to increase giant panda populations and their habitats through joining hands with partners to establish a panda conservation network, to carry out consistent biodiversity monitoring and anti-poaching work, to promote eco-tourism, environmental education, to improve the capacity and nature reserves management.

Panda Conservation Strategic Action (PSA)

PSA is composed of projects that support surveys and studies on panda-conservation-related issues and coordinate cross-cutting issues of ecotourism, monitoring and patrolling and community development to influence policy changes.
